Milliner of the Month, Maria Curcic

How did you become interested in millinery ?

As long as I can remember, I wore hats as a child and recall women wearing them. The hats were intriquing.

Where and did you learn millinery ?

I studied Art and design and learned through a few “ basic millinery” techniques through a friend of mine. I have always been interested in Design and fashion.

How long have you been a milliner for ? Where else did you work ?

I have been a milliner for the past 10 years. I also worked in the field of Interior Design, so I was exposed to alot of amazing fabrics and design.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs ?

Most of my inspirations are from my travels of Europe and abroad. Even a drive to the mountains inspires me as well as music, it helps me sketch up many ideas.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

I designed a hat for a woman who went to a wedding in Holland, she wanted something “ chic” and attention grabbing, but not too loud. It was real fun to allow myself to push the limits !

How would you describe your style of hats?

Ecclectic mix of the past and present. Influences of architecture, bold lines and symmetry.

Who do you make hats for ?
I make hats for women who want something “one of a kind” or something to suit their personalities. A hat with character and pizazz!
What materials and techniques do you favour?
I enjoy working with sinamy and most felts, I enjoy sculting with these materials and creating interesting shapes beyond the “ hat block”
Any other interests?
I am also an artist, in a few collections in Europe and the U.S.A. I also dj at night, mostly corporate events, high end fashion shows, wine tastings, The Opera and others.
