Milliner of the Month: Se-young Yoon
How did you become interested in millinery ?
After graduated High school I was looking for a something special for my life instead of entering a University. And I found a hat shop where gives lessons in millinery. There was a decisive reason why i took the course is because my heart was beating with some feelings when I saw wooden hat blocks in there.I don't know how i can explain that feelings I felt.and then,I decided to do that.
Where and did you learn millinery ?
I studied millinery in Korea with a lady who is the only person who gives a lesson in millinery in Korea. She studied millinery in France and I learnt how to make a felt hat,straw hat,soft hat and so on with her as a traditional way.But i felt it is not enough to know the hat in Korea so I decided to study abroad and found Kensington & Chelsea College which is in London. Eventually I finished HNC Millinery last year in spite of father's opposition..
How long have you been a milliner for ? Where else did you work ?
I'd learnt millinery in Korea for about 2 years, I also assisted a milliner in Korea before I went to London for study. While i was studying in London,I did work-experience with Stephen Jones. Now I work as a bespoke milliner in Korea.
Where do you get inspiration for your designs ?
It could be anything actually.
The 6 hats for my final collection were inspired by fish and some of hats are
picked elements from fish such as fins, tail, scales and over all movement of fish.
What has been your most enjoyable commission?
Probably the "HAT SHOW" during the HNC Millinery course. All of hats gave me a pleasure and pain at the same time. But I really enjoyed it!
How would you describe your style of hats?
A combination of classic and modern, delicate and the finest handwork.
Who do you make hats for ?
My hats are for people who want to look special and different from the others. I make occasional hats and bride head pieces.
What materials and techniques do you favour?
I like working with finest material and making them as a traditional way.
Also I love beading.That's my favourite one.
Any other interests?
Reading(especially fashion magazine),going to gallery, museums, travel, cinema,
yoga.
