4th Annual Australian Millinery Collection

It’s Hat Heaven

The Millinery Association of Australia presents its
4th Annual Millinery Collection on Tuesday 7 October 2003.

The Millinery Collection 2003, showcasing Australia’s millinery talents in one spectacular show, celebrates its fourth successful year with two parades on Tuesday 7 October 2003 at the Atrium at Flemington Racecourse, home of the famous Melbourne Cup Carnival.

With more than 30 milliners from around the country participating, the Millinery Collection features work from Melbourne millinery stars Louise Macdonald, Peter Jago, Serena Lindeman, Kim Fletcher, Ashley Franklin and Rebecca Share and South Australia’s Rick McGill (currently working on Star Wars episode TBA). This years show will present more than 120 original and exciting creations and the ever popular fantasy hats segment will dazzle and delight with milliners going all out to create bigger, better and bolder hats than ever before.

The Millinery Collection is arguably the largest collection of millinery on the catwalk in Australia.

And in a coup for those guest wanting to snap up designs hot off the runway, following the show, hats will be on display and guests have the opportunity to meet the milliners and purchase any of the one-off creations.

This year sees the Millinery Association of Australia induct its first milliner into the Hall of Fame, and honour in celebration of achievement and excellence in the industry and part of the Association’s on-going efforts to promote millinery in Australia.

Millinery Association of Australia President, June Edwards, says, “The Association is very pleased to announce the Hall of Fame award, especially as our milliners create hats of a standard which is recognised internationally and we must acknowledge the contribution milliners make to the Australian fashion industry.

On trends for this years Spring Racing season, Ms Edwards continues, “We can expect to see a diverse range of hats including smaller headpieces, which are proving very popular with young women. Fascinators will be small and quirky using cinemae, feathers, feather quills and interesting sculptural features. Design lines are a strong feature in this seasons millinery.”

“Women always love a luxurious hat and we will see these with swept, curved brims. Colours are strong and include grape, pastels, the ever-popular pink, and bold calypso colours reminiscent of Caribbean tropical flowers. Black and white remains a timeless favourite along with the classic colours of chocolate, beige, sand and caramel.”

And as part of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, The Westin Melbourne will host the Millinery Collection 2003 preview, an exhibition of 20 hats featured in the hotel lobby from Monday 1 September at The Westin, 205 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Tickets are available for two shows, 10.30am (including morning tea) and 7.00pm (including canapés) on Tuesday 7 October 2003, at the Atrium, Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne. Tickets are $39.50 (inc GST). For bookings, please call 1300 727 575.
