"Dubai World Cup 2008 ”
Our reporters Louise Macdonald and Judith Breckenridge attended the 2008 dubai World Cup horse race where the fashion is just as much part of the attraction as the horses. A fashion competition, offering generous prizes from BurJuman, takes place at the start of the event from 4.00pm, followed by a spectacular opening ceremony and horse races that go on late into the evening.
The Judges of the "Style Stakes" fashion competition this year were British milliner, Cosmo Jenks, stylist Kelly Lundberg from Dubai, Ahlan Magazine Editor Katie Heskett and Emirates Airline advertising manager, Tim Burnell.
Lashings of clipped feathers are always a favourite of Dubai racegoers and judges were given a wide selection of contestants from which to choose. However the judges selected 2 bewildered ladies for the winner and runner up in the best dressed catagory. Leila Amar in 2nd place chose a simple black dress, orange patent shoes and a matching orange shower scrubber from the local supermarket pinned into her hair! The winner, Milena Diaz wore a small black headpiece to compliment her white Betty Jackson frock.
Congratulations to Kim Fletcher for creating the hat to receive the Millinery Award at the Dubai World Cup this year. The hat was worn by Abi Ferreira and was a black sinamay tilted disc trimmed with red Lady Amhurst feathers, which complimented her outfit beautifully.
This follows Kims stunning win at the 2007 Melbourne Cup, where she received the professional designers Millinery Award for an amber Jin sin sculpted headpiece.
